Your trips are saved automatically to your private Supabase cloud and synced across your devices — no manual backup needed. Export is just for keeping your own copy of the data.
Separately, this project's database is backed up automatically once a day by Supabase (kept for 7 days) — that happens in the background, no action needed. If data ever needs restoring from one of those backups, that's done directly in the Supabase dashboard by the project admin. The Export/Restore buttons below are a different, manual thing you control yourself — good for your own copy, but not the same as the automatic daily backup.
Runs the same country-detection logic used when editing a trip, but across every trip at once — reading each trip's places, filling in or updating its Trip / Country Name field, and preserving whatever description is already there. A one-time catch-up — safe to run any time.
New cover photos already upload to storage automatically — you don't need this for those. Use this only if an old-style cover photo ever ends up embedded in your trip data again (for example after restoring an old backup). It checks every trip, moves any embedded photo it finds into storage, and replaces it with a short link. If nothing needs moving, it just tells you that and does nothing — safe to run any time.
Add trips from a prepared import file. This adds to your existing trips — it never replaces them. Places are looked up automatically.

A small summary line above those dropdowns ties all three together — e.g. "2 trips (shown below) · 1 in Activities & Events · 13 photos in Photo index" — so you can see everything that matched at a glance without missing a system.
Trip vs Activity/Event, in short: a Trip is usually a proper journey away — somewhere you travelled to, with dates, stops, a write-up, maybe flights or hotels — but it doesn't have to span multiple days. Even a single day can be logged as a Trip if it was a bigger occasion: enough happened, enough photos came out of it, and it got its own dedicated, separate album rather than just living loose in a library. That dedicated album is exactly what a Trip's photo links (OneDrive, Lightroom, or others) are for. Its photos live in those linked albums — the trip stores the link(s), so opening a trip in Faraway gets you straight to the full photo set for that day or journey. An Activity or Event, by contrast, is a smaller, local occasion that didn't get that dedicated-album treatment — a birthday, Christmas, a day out — logged here just as a date, title, category, and optional note, purely so it shows up on the Year Overview timeline and is easy to find again. Faraway does not store or link Activity/Event photos at all — they simply live in your Apple Photos libraries, findable only by the exact title you gave them there (matching the Activity/Event's title). Anything that isn't a Trip and isn't logged as an Activity or Event — everyday photos, casual moments, anything you haven't specifically titled as one — also just lives in your Apple Photos libraries, and is searchable here only through the Photo index below, by whatever title or keyword you gave those photos in Photos itself.
Filters the main list on screen. Checks: trip name, country, notes, year, best time to visit, story overview, story stays, story highlights, participants, each stop's name and country, category labels, and photo link labels (OneDrive, Lightroom, etc.).
Best way to use it: separate words with a comma to require all of them, in any field, in any order — e.g. japan, hiking finds any trip that matches both "japan" and "hiking" somewhere, even if one is in the country field and the other in a highlight.

Shown in its own "N matching photos" dropdown. This searches the metadata you've imported from your separate yearly Apple Photos libraries via osxphotos — not the photos themselves, just their title, keywords, and any named faces. A match here means that photo's title, one of its keywords, or a named face contains your search term — so naming someone in Photos' People & Pets makes them searchable here too, without needing to also keyword them. Same comma logic as Trips and Events — e.g. Nevio, birthday finds any photo where "Nevio" appears (title, keyword, or a named face) and "birthday" also appears somewhere, in any combination. Results are grouped by library — a "Photo Library 20XX · N photos" header per library, collapsed by default. Tap a header to expand it: each distinct title is listed once (with a \u00d7N count if several photos share that exact title), so you get a clean overview of what matched in that library rather than scrolling through every single photo. This is the only place in this app where photos that are neither a Trip nor a logged Activity/Event become searchable at all — so the more consistently you title, keyword, and name faces directly in Photos, the more of your photo history shows up here. Libraries you haven't imported yet won't show up at all — see the Photo index card in Insights to add more.
